Higher income thresholds, a $15.48 million estate exclusion and expanded business tax limits shape 2027 planning for affluent clients and founders.

2027 Tax Brackets Raise Thresholds for High Earners and Business Owners

Higher thresholds reshape 2027 tax planning

The 2027 inflation adjustments increase the income thresholds for the top federal ordinary tax rates and expand several limits relevant to estates, business investment and founders. For affluent clients, the changes create more taxable income room within some brackets, while making income timing and the structure of business transactions important planning questions.

The 37% bracket begins at $793,650 for married couples filing jointly and $661,375 for single filers. The 35% rate starts above $529,100 for joint filers and $264,550 for single filers; the 32% rate starts above $416,650 and $208,325, respectively. These are thresholds for taxable income, so deductions and other tax items affect where a client lands.

The adjustment to income brackets came close to the 3.2% projection Bloomberg Tax published in September, differing by less than a few basis points. That close alignment gives planners an early basis for comparing estimates with the final figures. The thresholds still need to be considered alongside each client’s income mix and deductions.

For a single filer, the 32% band spans about $56,000 of taxable income. A bonus, a sizable Roth conversion or proceeds from a partial business sale could push income across more than one bracket in the same year. Joint filers have roughly twice that room in the band. The tax rate applies to income within each bracket, so crossing a threshold does not make all taxable income subject to the higher rate.

The 2025 tax law also caps the benefit of itemized deductions for taxpayers in the 37% bracket. That makes the timing of large charitable gifts a question for clients whose income has risen faster than inflation since the 2026 bracket reset. The bracket thresholds alone do not show whether a particular gift or income event will change a client’s final tax bill; the deduction cap and the client’s full tax picture matter too.

Investment income and trusts follow different thresholds

The long-term capital gains thresholds also rise. Joint filers pay a 0% rate on long-term gains up to $102,100 of taxable income and 15% up to $633,600, with a 20% rate above that level. For single filers who are not married or heads of households, the corresponding cutoffs are $51,050 and $563,200. Because the thresholds are based on taxable income, gains interact with other income in the calculation.

Non-grantor trusts face much lower thresholds: the 37% ordinary income rate begins above $16,500 of taxable income, and the 20% capital gains rate begins above $16,750. That gap makes beneficiary distributions a potential planning variable. Modeling how income would be taxed inside the trust or by beneficiaries can help clarify the consequences before income accumulates in the trust.

Clients with incentive stock options also have an alternative minimum tax threshold to monitor. The AMT exemption for joint filers rises to $144,700 and begins phasing out at $1,031,900. The higher exemption does not remove the need to model a potential exercise: the tax result depends on the client’s broader income and option position.

Business limits expand, with a larger QSBS cap

The qualified business income deduction’s income limits begin phasing in at $416,600 for joint filers and $208,300 for most other filers. The phase-in range ends at $566,600 for joint filers and $283,300 for most others. Owners of professional practices, including physicians, attorneys and consultants, are among those most exposed within that range. The thresholds make income level a key input when estimating the deduction.

Section 179 expensing rises to $2,640,000 from $2,560,000. The limit is reduced dollar for dollar once qualifying property placed in service during the year exceeds $4,230,000. For businesses considering equipment purchases, both the deduction limit and the amount of qualifying property placed in service affect how much may be expensed under this provision.

For founders, the first inflation adjustment to the qualified small business stock exclusion cap may draw particular attention. Under the 2025 law, Section 1202 limits are indexed for years after 2026. For 2027, the per-issuer gain exclusion cap rises to $15,480,000, and the qualifying company gross-asset ceiling rises to $77,390,000. Founders and clients preparing for a potential business exit over the next several years may need to revisit how much gain could qualify for exclusion. Eligibility and the amount available depend on the relevant details of the stock and company.

Estate and gift limits increase

The basic estate tax exclusion for people who die in 2027 rises to $15,480,000, from $15 million. The same amount applies to the generation-skipping transfer tax exemption. A married couple using both spouses’ exclusions can shelter $30.96 million. These figures establish the available exclusions; they do not by themselves determine the outcome for a particular estate.

The annual gift exclusion increases to $20,000 per recipient from $19,000. Couples who split gifts can transfer $40,000 a year to each child or grandchild without using their lifetime exclusion. That higher annual amount may give families more room to transfer assets while tracking gifts against the applicable limits.

Across the adjustments, the most useful planning work is likely to be client specific: estimate taxable income against the new brackets, assess how income events interact with capital gains and deductions, and review business and estate limits where they apply. The figures provide new boundaries for those decisions, but an individual’s income, timing and eligibility determine how much they matter.
